The Good, the Bad, and the Holy: Prominent Men and Women of the Bible: Introduction

For centuries both children and adults have never seemed to tire of Bible stories. One reason for the intrigue is that the stories invariably involve relationships—of human with human and, most intriguing, of human with a personal deity. It will always be mind-boggling to perceptive humans that there is an eternal, astoundingly infinite Being who is actually interested and deeply involved in the affairs of infinitesimal beings lost somewhere in the Milky Way.

This book delves into some of the dealings of this God with a variety of individuals. What some fail to realize in biblical accounts is that these people were as humanly real and fallible as we are today, yet God treated them as eminently worthy of His tender concern. The Bible says that those things which occurred in their lives were written down as examples or warnings to us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come (1 Cor. 10:11). Now they stand as a “great cloud of witnesses” to our own encounters with this God of the Bible.

This book is not intended to be an exhaustive biography of all Bible characters, nor is it meant to present nearly every fact known about selected characters. Its purpose will have been fulfilled if it:

  1. Provides fresh insight regarding chief traits of biblical personalities and,
  2. Motivates readers to either repudiate negative traits or emulate positive ones as viewed through these individuals’ lives. May you find a steady river of encouragement and blessing in the reading of this book. To this end my prayers are devoted.
