Psalm 27 - Wait upon the Lord

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27 v1

At the outset of the Psalm, David speaks with a confidence in God:

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after;

that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.

Psalm 27 v4

David has a thirst for God and an overwhelming desire to be with God.

Teach me thy way, O LORD,

and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

Psalm 27 v13

David wants to be led by God and be obedient to God's direction.

Then in the climax of this Psalm we are exhorted:

Wait on the LORD:

be of good courage,

and he shall strengthen thine heart:

wait, I say, on the LORD.

Psalm 27 v14

The Hebrew word for wait may also be translated hope. We are in effect called to wait and hope on God.

We should be encouraged because as the Psalmist says, if we wait upon the Lord he will strengteh our hearts.

In Psalm 27 there is a certitude that God will strengthen the hearts of those who wait upon God.

Are you waiting on God today? Are you confident that He will strengthen you?

The song Everlasting God by Chris Tomlin draws upon this theme of waiting upon God
